A rare native grape variety, the Räuschling was probably planted in the 4th and 5th centuries by Roman landowners and retired legionaries. Since it was planted so long ago, the grape has undergone natural genetic mutations over the centuries and become an indigenous grape variety. A Zurich native, the grape can now be found throughout Switzerland, which has about 20 hectares of these vineyards in total. Lake Zurich is, in fact, home to 12 hectares of this variety, demonstrating the importance of the grape in this area.
The word Räuschling probably comes from the German word, “rauschen,” which means “to rustle.” The vine does indeed make a unique sound. It has very heavy, hairy leaves and is quite wind-resistant. So, when the wind blows, you really hear the wind rustle through the vineyards.”
Color: Bright yellow with delicate green hues.
Nose: Aromas of juicy green apples and fresh pears, some pineapple and white flowers with a hint of chamomile.
Palate: The aroma of fresh fruit is very pronounced. A delicate minerality gives the wine a lot of freshness. The aromas are supported by a lively acidity (“it literally makes your mouth water”).
Finish: Medium long, very fresh and fruity.
Food pairings: Light poultry and fish dishes (for example, Coq au Riesling), or simply enjoy the wine on its own.
